Cichlids

Cichlids are fishes from the Family Cichlidae, and are considered by many experts to be one of the largest vertebrate families, with total species estimates ranging from 1,300-1,900 individuals. Along with their vast species diversity, the Cichlid Family also contains the highest number of endangered individuals of any Vertebrate Family. Cichlids are mainly freshwater fish and are found predominantly in Africa and Central and South America. Most of the species we stock and sell originate from three large rift lakes in Central Africa: Lakes Malawi, Victoria, and Tanganyika. The fishes from these lakes are known for their wide ranging color and evolved behavioral patterns.

About Cichlids

Cichlids are mainly herbivores and omnivores, with a diet consisting of algae, plants, and small invertebrates. There are also those species that are carnivorous, feeding on small fish, insect larvae, and invertebrates. Still others are detritivores feeding on all types of organic matter, both living and dead.

African Cichlids are renowned for their unique and interesting behavioral patterns. Most male species, which are commonly the most vibrant, will display a varying number of colors depending on their current "mood." These are known to hobbyists as "Fright Patterns," because the most pronounced color change will occur if the fish feels threatened or challenged by another cichlid or predator. Their colors will also change dramatically during "courting."

African Cichlids are known for their interesting style of reproduction. Most species are what is known as "Mouth Brooders," meaning they care for the eggs and larvae in their mouth. The female will usually carry the young for 2-3 weeks, or until they can swim and feed on their own. All of these interesting features make Cichlids a wonderfully enjoyable pet to own.

Our Stock

At CPCS, we stock an extensive variety of African Cichlids, covering the entire spectrum of colors and patterns, and varying in size from 2-5 inches. We also deal with Cichlid breeders and importers from around the country, allowing us to be selective in the fish we chose to stock and breed. Many of the fish we offer are bred right in our in-house breeding community from wild caught or first generation, tank raised (F1) parents. Wild and F1 fish are known to be more colorful, live longer, and grow to be 1-2 inches larger. CPCS also have a large variety of live aquatic plants available to our customers. We believe that all aquariums should contain natural live plants in order to maintain a proper ecosystem, but the we always let the customer make the decision on what exactly suits their needs.
